Winning the story. Winning our lives.

Press Clippings

Shanelle is a strategic and effective communicator and a thoughtful and passionate advocate for racial and reproductive justice (among other things). I worked with her most closely in her role as the architect of a campaign to shift the conversation and reduce the stigma around parents on welfare, which eventually helped lead to a legislative repeal of California's family cap policy. I hope our professional paths cross again!

Shanelle is a mentor and a leader; she's an organizer and one of the best communicators that I know. She uses storytelling and relationships to build meaningful narratives and long-lasting partnerships. Shanelle's leadership and her sharp understanding of new media platforms creates space for others to share their stories.

As the Deputy Communications Director for the Beyond Coal Campaign, Shanelle coached me through a major career transition from day-to-day press work into management and higher-level strategic thinking. We worked closely together on the regional communications response to a major campaign milestone: the retirement of the nation's 200th coal plant. Shanelle always centered the local priorities, messengers and realities in this major coordinated communications effort, and masterfully handled internal campaign needs with those of our funders and partners. She kept our response strategic and focused.

Shanelle recognizes that people bring their whole selves to work, and she creates space for self care and reflection. This approach rang true in both our weekly check-in spaces, as well as in larger group meetings that she facilitated. Our team was stronger as a result of Shanelle's leadership, and I feel privileged to have been directly managed by Shanelle at the Sierra Club.
